Must Have Thread Colors – Top Three Thursday July 26, 2018 – Posted in: Top 3 Thursday – Tags: , , ,

What are the three must have thread colors for fly tying?

Sure, thread isn’t that expensive. There really isn’t any reason why a tyer should only have three different thread colors. However, if you’re tying a lot or are just getting into tying flies, there are some core color choices. Here are our top three choices for fly tying thread colors. What would your top three be?

  • Olive – If you only had one thread color for fly tying, it would be olive. Olive has the ability to look darker with dark materials and lighter with light materials. It can be expertly integrated into pretty much all dries, nymphs, and streamers without standing out.
  • White – The only exception to the above sentiment is when you are tying delicate flies. So many bugs and baitfish have translucent profiles. White checks that important box.
  • Red – Need a bright collar on a streamer? Want a contrasting thread body on a dry? How about one of the best dropper flies out there – a hook simply wrapped with red thread. Red is an understated yet powerfully attractive color tyers should use more.

So, what did we leave out? What are your must-have thread colors? What would your top three look like? Let us know below!
